Actually it’s a battery powered fight, but in either case it is certainly going to be a fight we will all want to sit back and watch, and maybe even participate in, at least a little bit. To start with what has been the mainstay for Tesla so far since they burst on the scene? They offer a long range car that doesn’t have a gasoline backup at all. Well, their corner of the market is starting to round as other automakers come up with vehicles concepts and production models that offer similar if not better fuel ranges.
One such automaker is Mercedes-Benz. Recently Mercedes- Benz spoke and unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show the Electric Drive which is a concept SUV that offers up to a 300 mile range on a single charge. This was the vehicle of choice because Mercedes- Benz stated they needed the space for the batteries that are needed to reach this range and offer an SUV that would carry a longer range than the Tesla models. Because Mercedes-Benz has shown us the concept, and the Tesla SUV keeps getting moved back we aren’t sure what or when one of these will finally make it to market.
Another factor in this electric fight is the announcement that Audi has an electric SUV planned as well. This certainly makes the appearance that the German automakers are out to ruin the fun of Tesla and show up the company that is so brash as to not even offer a gasoline powered backup in their cars; who does that? Tesla does and as they get closer to being able to offer the Model X in a form they can be satisfied with they just might win the race to offer the first all-electric SUV that can offer a range that is worthy of heading out in the outdoors.
What has been quiet so far but wouldn’t surprise me is both the possibility of an all-electric SUV from BMW; they already have the i3 and i8, so an SUV would not be that much of a stretch for them. Another company that might just entire the fight would be GM. Their Bolt that is about to be released could be just the right platform for a compact crossover SUV that is powered solely by an electric motor. It’s evident that since many automakers have found themselves with the ability to offer longer ranges in their electric vehicles we may see several come in SUV form very soon.
Whether other automakers are waiting for the first run of SUVs to arrive and show what not to do or they are all going to show up on the scene at once like a giant electric fireworks show we will get to witness very soon. The one thing that is certain however is the fact that Tesla needs to put the Model X to production very soon if they want to stay ahead of the competition that is quickly chomping on their heels.
