When it comes to new technology, we look to Apple to be a leader in the world of smartphones and Elon Musk and Tesla as tech leaders in the automotive industry. When asked if he was concerned about the competition Apple could bring in to the automotive world and whether or not Apple was making a car the answer from Musk was rather interesting.
First he confirmed that the fact that Apple is making a car is an open secret and with their massive hiring of engineers to help create their cars it should be obvious to all of us that they are working on automotive technology. Must also said he feels the competition that can come from Apple being in the mix is a good thing and that he has always viewed Tesla as an accelerant toward the next version of technology.
What is seems Apple may be working on is an EV car, but more than that is the expectation they are testing and advancing autonomous technology. This certainly gives us the possibility of Apple giving us two of what we need in one vehicle in the future. Imagine an Apple car that was an EV but also and autonomous car that could drive it; that would be something new for the masses to line up at the Apple store for, which would now need a large car lot to sell from.
The expectation is not that Apple will enter the automotive industry with a line of cars until they have an autonomous vehicle that can be offered and allowed to drive on the road. This may cause a bit of a problem for Apple if they continue to push to be the first to this technology. They already have felt a decline in sales as their iPhone 6 has slowed down in sales and the stock of Apple has started to fall. This may mean there are needs to have their cars show up on the road before they are fully autonomous. This could be a good thing though because we already have semi-autonomous vehicles from Tesla and other manufacturers, meaning Apple could fit right in and see some increases in their sales and profits.
Will Apple be the first to market with the fully autonomous vehicle or will someone else be there first? With autonomous vehicles that will require a massive amount of technology we not only see the direct competitors of the automotive industry working toward this goal, but we also see technology competitors doing the same. The rumors are no long rumors as we know Apple is working on a car and Google has been doing so for a couple years already. It will be amazing to see which company makes it to the finish line first and is able to convince the government to allow these cars to drive on the roads anywhere in the world. The race is on; who will make it to the finish line first?
