More Electrification from Nissan is on the Way

For two generations, the Nissan Leaf has been the most popular electric vehicle on the global market. This car has been offered at an affordable price and brought the range we wanted with more range, power, and features being added to the most recent offering. Even with the success of the Leaf, Nissan isn’t sitting back and watching this car be the only electric offering they have. The Nissan team showed us a new electric concept at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show that could become the basis for the next collection of Nissan electric vehicles.

The Nissan IMX Grows

At the show in Tokyo, Nissan brought the IMX concept which shows the future vision for a battery electric crossover. At that time, Nissan hinted they would put this concept model into production in the middle of 2020 or the beginning of 2021 to give us a new line of electric models from this brand. While the idea of a Nissan electric crossover SUV is enticing, there’s more to this story with new trademarks that have been filed for the Nissan IM collection in order to be the electric models we’ll want to enjoy.

Additional Trademarks for the Nissan IM Family

We don’t have the Nissan IMX as a production model yet and still, the brand has filed trademarks for the IMS and IMQ names. This leaves us with a few questions and makes us wonder what these trademarks will become when it’s time for the drive on the road. One question that arises is to wonder if the IMX will die as a concept model and not be offered at all. Another question for the Nissan team is what the IMQ name means? It’s easy to see how the names of IMX and IMS were derived, but IMQ has us stumped.

The Power Within

While the Nissan Leaf has turned to its popularity and affordability to compete with the other EV models on the market, the new IMX model that showed up in Tokyo was said to be powered by two high-output electric motors that make 429 horsepower and 517 lb.-ft. of torque. The power isn’t all that this concept was able to boast about, this is a vehicle that had the capacity to drive for 372 miles on a single charge to give us a clear advantage when it comes to the range desired.

The Meaning of the Names

Putting a bit of the mystery to rest, the name of IMX comes from the term Intelligent Mobility for the IM, and the X is for all-wheel drive crossover. The IMS, therefore, would replace the AWD crossover with sport to give us the IMS name, but we still aren’t sure what the Q in the IMQ would be. Look for new models to show up in Detroit or in Geneva to give us a better idea of what the Nissan team has in mind when it comes to the next level of electric driving.

To experience the electric drive of Nissan, consult with your local Nissan vehicle as these models become available. As for Nissan’s electric mainstay, the Leaf, it has been out long enough to saturate itself into the new and used Nissan market.
