Iconic Car Series: “Baby” from Supernatural

If you’re a fan of the show Supernatural, you’re familiar with the car driven by the Winchesters. This car is named Baby and it’s special.

With the deletion of many of the sedans in the world of today, and the desire to have a car that shows off as an icon, Baby is a 1967 Chevy Impala and it brings a special part to the show while being one of the coolest cars ever made.

The First Crash

One of the qualities that Baby seems to have been an indestructible nature. This car has been crashed many times and the first time was at the end of season one. During this episode, Yellow Eyes possessed a truck driver and rammed a semi-truck into the Impala. The season ended with the three Winchesters out cold in the supernatural car without any information as to whether or not they survived the crash.

Baby Turns into KITT

Another one of the most famous scenes with Baby too place during an episode with the Trickster/Gabriel sending Sam and Dean into a TV world. In this world, during the episode titled “Changing Channels” the group ended up in the Knight Rider series and Baby was made to play the role of KITT the talking car. Sam’s mind and body were combined with Baby which dubbed this scene Sampala by fans of the show.

The Supernatural Car has been Possessed

There’s no denying the affection that Dean has for Baby and one way that enemies have tried to get the best of Dean has been to try and take over the car. The first instance of possession of this car was by the Woman in White in the pilot episode. She took control of the gear and chased Sam and Dean off a bridge and into the water.

Going Cartoon in a Classic Way

The makers of Supernatural must be fans of classic cartoons because they chose Scooby-Doo as the cartoon for the car and the Winchesters to be turned into. This episode is known as ScoobyNatural and the classic Impala rides along next to The Mystery Machine and takes on the classic van in a drag race. Surprisingly, the van was able to beat Baby during this race.

The History of this Car

We do get to learn some of the history of the Supernatural car in the season five finale “Swan Song” which has Chuck as the narrator. This history begins with its initial production and takes it through the time the boys grew up in the car and covers much of what they have been through together. The thought of the final sentiment is that this car has always provided a home for the boys that don’t actually have an address.

Another Parody Emerges

Another one of the most popular scenes in the show gives us a time travel scene in which Dean goes back to before he was born when his father, John Winchester, needed to buy a car to bring home to the family that is beginning. His wife Mary is pregnant with Dean and he’s considering a minivan, but Dean shows up to convince young John to buy the Impala. This is truly a scene that mirrors the events from Back to the Future.

Baby is Destroyed Again

Season Seven found the Winchesters pitted against the Leviathans which were the strongest monsters they had ever faced. Nothing seems to work and defeat is nearly imminent when Dean gives the keys of Baby to Meg the demon to create a distraction. Meg crashes the Supernatural car into a glass sign while the Winchesters find a way to get inside to defeat the Leviathans.

Giving the Car a Personality

A 1967 Impala that is driven through fifteen seasons of a show is certainly iconic enough, but one episode in Season 11 was completely dedicated to showing things from the perspective of the car. Even though the boys make little progress in their hunt for the Darkness, seeing everything from the perspective of the car that loves the boys is pretty cool.

Coming Out of Retirement

Putting Baby under a tarp in the garage seems like it would signal the end of the show and the end of hunting down supernatural beings. Even though Dean is trying to move to retirement after Sam jumped into the pit with Lucifer, Sam returns and this means Dean and Baby need to get back to work. As the Supernatural car comes out of retirement we see the tarp pulled back to reveal a car that is ready to go.

Dean Goes Out On His Terms

Dean tires of fighting off the Mark of Cain and seeks out Death to take his life. Before he takes the final move, he leaves Baby to Sam in an abandoned motel parking lot with a note to same that reads “She’s all yours” which gave many fans a fit of distress. How could Dean leave the Supernatural car, Baby this way?
