Porsche is a German company, but a collection of models come from one of the German Allies from World War II.

In a Japanese workshop, an old world of sports cars comes to life to give us a few imperfectly perfect vehicles that deliver the build, drive, and quality that new owners look for. The creator of these specialized models is a bit of a recluse, but his cars are extremely popular and made their way to the 2009 Toyota Auto Salon to show us the classic look of some amazing new and older cars put together.

The Shy Owner Receives More Attention than Desired

Akira Nakai is the creator’s name, and he was hard to connect with to talk about his cars. These cars have become a worldwide sensation, but he doesn’t speak English and hides from the spotlight in a reclusive way. Thankfully, he did talk to MotorTrend and gave us a little history of why these cars are made the way they are. Nakai-san never expected to have this much attention donned on him for his cars. He loves the cars, not the attention.

Falling in Love With Sports Cars

Akira Nakai remembers falling in love with speed while watching an American movie at seven years old. After seeing a car tail-slide around a corner on the screen, he fell in love with performance cars and what they represent. After seeing several other fast cars in American movies, he was hooked on fast cars and wanted to learn how to create them. To this day, Nakai-san wakes up in the workshop nest to his 911, which serves as his inspiration to make some fantastic cars for the rest of the day.

We Know the Creator, Now, Let’s Discuss the Creation

The small tuning shop that churns out these unique Porsche models choose the cars for the middle of the 1970s. In some ways, this was the highlight of 911 racing when Porsche was winning race after race year after year. These cars also have some of the most bulbous curves and shape to give use to the widebody build of the Turbo models and the large, rounded headlights that seem to jut out from the sides of the hood in classic form. The models built at the tuning shoe are from the 930 and 964 generations.

The 930 Porsche models are reminiscent of the Group 4 endurance GT racing models. The fact that these cars are recreated and built with a unique name on them and have reached cult status. This status might not be what Akira Nakai had in mind for his company, but there’s no looking back. These cars are trendy and fun. These cars are instantly recognizable for their aerodynamics and bold colors. These colors go from a subdued matte-black through the pastels of Easter eggs to some of the brightest colors like orange and bright green for some great colors that make these cars extremely attractive.

Flawed Features Give These Cars Personality

If you think back to the days of the 930 and 964 Porsche models, you know that many sports cars of that era left drivers on the side of the road. These tuner cars are built with a few flaws in each car which becomes part of its character. Nakai-san believes the ritual of repairing faulty wiring or making starter work brings an owner closer to the car. To get these faults to life, he builds the cars with rivets, tape, and zip ties allowing the car to bring the imperfections to life and deliver a soulful ride that allows the car to have more personality.

Where Does the Name Come From?

The name, which is plastered in initials on each of these Porsche models, was translated for you in the title. Even though Akira Nakai is Japanese, he uses a German name for his cars. The word is loosely translated from Rauh Welt Begriff to mean Rough World Concept, reflecting how Nakai-san likes to drive his own Porsche. He loves to go it rough and brings the same idea to the cars he creates.

What Do the 930 Models Offer?

Nakai’s original car is the 930 version of the Porsche 911. This car is the same one he drives, and the manufacturer originally produced it from 1974 to 1989. He goes a 930 model himself and prefers the naturally-aspirated model over the 911 Turbo model, the first supercar from this brand. His car is a matte-black model that wears the RWB widebody kit and has the 3.8-liter engine with carburetors. This allows the car to require constant maintenance, which he prefers.

All RWB models are made as dual-purpose drivers. These cars can be taken out for fun on the street and driven hard at the track. Nakai believes neither type of driving is more important than the other, but the road offers him the greatest inspiration.

Stunning 964 Models Created

The 964 generation of the 911 lasted from 1989 to 1994 and were built to order by customers. One such model was made to reflect the 997 GT3 RS, which looks fantastic. This car was such a hit that another customer wanted a similar vehicle, and Nakai made one out of the 1990 Carrera 2 to look like the GT3 RS. These two cars wear the RWB 964 widebody kit and ride on an RWB suspension and 18-inch wheels.

You might not ever expect to find classic Porsche models being made in a small tuner shop in Japan by a man that doesn’t speak English, but that’s precisely what you see with the Rauh Welt Begriff models.
