Ford Honors Women’s Contributions to the Auto Industry with a ‘Men’s Only Edition’ Explorer

Ford Motor Company launched a new video campaign to celebrate International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month. The ad highlights the crucial role that women have played in the development of automobiles like a used Ford Explorer.

The video features a new Ford Explorer, ‘Men’s Only Edition’ that lacks many of the essential features that were invented or improved by women.

A Car Without Heaters, Windshield Wipers, Turn Signals, and More

The video starts with a typical car advertisement showcasing a new Ford Explorer. The narrator, Bryan Cranston, then explains that this is not an ordinary Explorer but a ‘Men’s Only Edition’ that has been completely reimagined by removing more than 100 years of women’s contributions to the auto industry.

The result is a car that does not have functional heaters, windshield wipers, turn signals, brake lights, GPS, rearview mirror, and many other common features. The narrator sarcastically invites viewers to experience “the thrill of driving like it’s 1899” and asks, “who needs innovation when you have tradition?” Can you imagine what driving a car without these typical features would be like? Even an older model used Ford Explorer has windshield wipers and turn signals.

A Tribute to Women Innovators and Change Makers

The video then reveals that it is a tribute to the women who have significantly contributed to the auto industry over the years. It showcases some of the female pioneers who developed groundbreaking technology, such as Hedy Lamarr (communication system used in cellular technology, Wi-Fi, and GPS), Florence Lawrence (brake and turn signals), Dorothy Levitt (rearview mirror), Dorothée Pullinger (car design for women) and Dr. Gladys West (modern-day GPS).

It also highlights some of the current Ford change makers who are leading various aspects of vehicle production, engineering, and design, such as Jennifer Brace (Trends and Futuring Manager), Jackie DiMarco (Vehicle Programs Director for F-Series and Commercial Trucks), Cynthia Flanigan (Chief Engineer for Hardware Integration) and Nicole Herrera (Computer Aided Engineering and Vibration Testing Engineer).

The video ends with a message that says, “Ford celebrates women who drive us forward” and invites viewers to learn more about their stories on Ford.com.

A Positive Response to Explorer Ad from Viewers

The video has received positive feedback from viewers who praised Ford for its creative way of honoring women’s achievements in the auto industry. Many viewers admitted that they learned something new from the video, while others expressed appreciation for Ford’s support for gender equality.

Ford has also announced that it will continue to support the campaign throughout March by featuring more stories of female innovators on its social media accounts. The company hopes that raising awareness about women’s contributions to the auto industry will inspire more girls and young women to pursue careers in STEM fields.
