Finding environmentally friendly ways to manufacture an automobile has been a challenge for many automakers. Having materials shipped in from far off lands, using energy and creating pollutants during the manufacturing process all have detrimental effects on the environment which automakers have to work to balance in order to create their products. For most this is a tradeoff between adding these negative elements to the environment and being able to produce the right cars for us as consumers who want to have new technology, better features and more capability to have cars that are engineered to perfection.
There is one car that is being built with the environment in mind in a more direct way than most. This car is the Morgan EV3 which is an electric powered three wheeled car that is even more environmentally friendly than a Tesla Model S and a Toyota Prius. Morgan is a name you don’t hear about often because their cars are built in small numbers and have never been made for the family or for much more than a quiet country drive, but the open wheel concept they use and the throwback styling that makes these cars feel like they came out of the 1930s makes them extremely interesting to look at and consider driving.
Another factor for the Morgan vehicles is the fact that these cars are built by hand. Not only are they built by and but they are built from local materials to keep the need to ship in parts to a minimum. When you look at the Morgan EV3 you will see the car uses local wood in the frame and carbon composite body panels to give you a car that has the environment in mind and shows a polarizing and fun to admire vehicle.
Another factor for the Morgan vehicles that should be taken into consideration is the fact that over ninety percent of the cars from this company are still on the road. Most Morgan owners do not drive their Morgan on a daily basis, but for over 107 years the company has been building these cars for us to enjoy and with most of them still driving around on the weekend, these cars are kept and cared for as if they were an important member of the family they belong to. No other car company can boast numbers anywhere near these when it comes to having cars still on the road.
Of course a car with only three wheels and an electric motor might not be the car you are looking to haul your family around in, but if you are looking for a weekend cruising car that has a classic look and is environmentally friendly at the same time. The EV3 is a unique and intriguing car that is built as green as possible; does this mean others will follow? Probably not, it would be nearly impossible to have volume manufacturers change to similar processes as Morgan, but the use of local materials just might be a way other manufacturers can change and become more eco-friendly.
