Tesla CEO Elon Musk is accustomed to getting things done the way he wants them to be. He has managed several companies and made his money in the technology sector only to reinvest and work toward making Tesla a household name and a leader in the industry. With the arrogance and exuberance he possesses his vision for Tesla is quickly becoming a reality as the brand continues to launch more models with the next model coming to market being the mainstream Model 3. Even though there are hurdles his company has to climb Musk continues to trek forward and now shows serious evidence of having some impressive forethought.
Looking to the other side of the Atlantic we see a company in disarray in the form of Volkswagen. After a scandal that halted their sales of diesel models in the US, and a costly settlement that has barely begun to be issued, Volkswagen sits poised to bring us a vehicle that is an EV that will have around 300 miles of driving range on one full battery charge. Amazingly this range is more than the current version of the Tesla Model S and will be presented in concept form at the Paris Motor Show in September.
You may recall that a code was found in the programming of the Tesla Model S recently. Hacker Jason Hughes found a message that carried the badge for the P100D in the coding and was commended by Elon Musk for his hacking abilities, but nothing more was mentioned. Recently the RDW which is the Dutch regulator and European authority to approve vehicles for use in Europe approved the 100D, P100D, and P100D with Ludicrous for Tesla giving us an idea that this P100D will become a reality. Unfortunately this 100-kWh battery variation hasn’t made its way to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) website yet, but you can expect it will be there soon.
With the 100D Model S on the road the car will have a full 300 miles of range and using the same battery pack in the Model X will still keep the vehicle around the 300 mile range. Those who want more range are going to get it and I would expect that will happen soon. In fact I would be shocked if this new battery pack doesn’t make its own appearance in Paris to ruin the Volkswagen party.
How could Elon Musk have known there would be a need for a 300 mile range or a 100-kWh battery pack? Like I said, the man has foresight. Of course with this new battery pack and the Ludicrous mode the Model S will have more power which means it could be even faster than before because of this increased performance. With this added range we see the Model S as a car that can nearly reach the same distance as a gasoline powered vehicle which typically averages around 350 miles on a tank of gas. Now if someone could reduce the charging time of a battery pack to around fifteen minutes we just might be able to make these cars even more mainstream than they are now.
