There is an old song with lyrics that sing “Anything you can do, I can do better” and this is the perfect song to put in your head when you think of these two automotive brands and what they mean to each other as bitter rivals. When you think of any automotive rivals there are two names that immediately come to mind, Ford and Chevrolet. These two have been at each other’s throats for years going back to the time when Henry Ford created the assembly line process of building cars to make them faster than anyone else had done before.
Whether you have the Mustang going against the Camaro, the Ford F-150 challenging the Silverado or the Expedition taking on the Suburban you have direct competition in the market with these two brands. These two have done the job of polarizing the nation with so many of us being brand oriented between the two for so long our hatred of the other brand has been passed down from one generation to the next. Now we have these two trading records, which isn’t the first time they have done this, and this record is one that may be out of control in no time.
In September Chevrolet set a Guinness World Record for pulling a flag around a track by pulling a 40 x 80 foot flag around the Texas Motor Speedway. This pull was a full 328 feet without the flag touching the ground and had a team of people there to make sure this flag never hit the tarmac at the speedway at all. This was a new record and by pulling an American flag it made for a huge show of patriotism for the company and gave them a video they could show off at any Chevrolet location to be the brand that did their country proud.
Of course, Ford couldn’t stand for this. Over this past weekend the final NASCAR race of the season was held at the Homestead track in Miami, giving Ford the perfect setting to set a new record of their own. Using an F-450 Super Duty Ford pulled a 45×92 foot flag around a full 360 feet of the track to beat the previous record and set a new record for the flag pull. This flag used 45-foot riggings to enable the rollout of the flag and keep it from hitting the ground.
Is it time for Chevrolet to do this again and set a new record? Will we see the NASCAR series open up at Daytona with a big Chevrolet truck pulling a flag that’s even larger than this previous one done by Ford? It seems the ball is in their court, the Guinness World Record team just needs to know where they need to go in order to see this event take place and make it official. February would seem to be the most likely next time this event would happen, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Chevrolet finds a way to do it even sooner.
