Jeep Enters the Hybrid Market with the Renegade and Compass

While we might not think about Jeep when discussing hybrids, we’re going to see the Renegade and Compass with hybrid powertrains soon.

When you think about a hybrid vehicle, you’re not likely to think of the Jeep brand. Names that typically come to mind are Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Chevrolet to name a few. The Jeep brand is reserved for the raw and unencumbered ride in the wilderness in an amazing SUV that has the power and the performance features we want to enjoy when we head out for an adventure.

A Pair of Jeeps receive the Hybrid Treatment

As shown at the Geneva Motor Show, Jeep will have a pair of SUVs offered in the future that will have hybrid powertrains. The expected timeframe is the 2020 model year and the two models that will bring in the added efficiency of a plug-in hybrid layout will be the Jeep Renegade and Jeep Compass. As the two smallest SUVs in the lineup, this is a great place to start so that we can have the added benefits of a hybrid powertrain in these capable and active SUVs that we love to drive.

The Jeep Hybrid Powertrain

Both of the Jeep SUVs that will use hybrid powertrains will have the same one for the drive. This system will begin with a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine plus an electric motor to offer a combined output of 240 horsepower. These SUVs will be able to drive on electric-only power for up to 31 miles when the battery pack is fully charged. No details have been released to let us know what the overall efficiency will be, but you can expect these two Jeep models to be much easier for you to enjoy the drive you want when you head out on the road.

A New AWD System from Jeep

The electric motor system of the hybrid Jeep SUVs will use a separate motor for each of the two axles to make it possible for you to have an excellent AWD system. This will allow power to be sent to the wheels that need power in order to give you the drive you’re looking for to get through snow, mud, dirt, and foul weather. The constant torque offered by this system could make these two models the most capable Jeeps in the Renegade and Compass family.

Get Ready for More Hybrids

Once the Jeep Renegade and Compass receive their hybrid powertrains, we won’t be able to leave Jeep out of the discussion of hybrid brands on the market. In fact, that list is getting longer every year and Jeep will be one of the brands that will show us what capability looks like when paired with hybrid power.

Let the right choice for your drive starting in 2020 be one of these two small Jeep SUVs and you’ll have the benefits of better fuel mileage, electric driving, and the engaging AWD system offered with this new powertrain.
