Will a Targa Top Arrived for the Toyota Supra?

Will a Targa Top Arrive for the Toyota Supra?

The Toyota Supra is a car that lives in automotive lore as one of the greatest cars ever made and it continues to pique our imagination.

Those who are huge fans of the fourth-generation version of this car can remember that it was offered with an available Targa roof. This means it had a roof that could be lowered the same as most convertibles, but not quite as much as a convertible, and allow the air to flow inside.

Toyota Make a Special Model for SEMA

With the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging lives around the world and the social distance we need to keep in order to remain safe, the SEMA show has been taken online instead of going to Las Vegas. This version of the show is called SEMA360 and it’s where you can find the new Supra which you can view and decide if it should be part of what we see going forward.

This new Toyota Supra is a companion car to the GR Supra Heritage Edition model and it brings you some great items. By taking the MKIV top and blending it with the model, a new concept with a Targa roof has been created. This new version will be called the GR Supra Sport Top and it brings a gorgeous removable roof panel to the mix while offering the body lines we love to see.

A Bit Better than the Targa Roof

The new design of the Supra with the removable roof panel was created without using a bar in the center of where the roof was. This led to challenges for the design and engineering team, especially when viewing the car as it rides over bumps on the road. The team employed some creativity and made a few adjustments to allow this open area in the Toyota Supra.

The Toyota Supra Roof Can Be Controlled Remotely

The fourth-generation of the Supra had a two-panel roof that was made of aluminum and could be removed by hand. While the new Supra Targa roof will also be handled to be removed, Toyota is working to make the latches that hold the roof in place to be remotely operated. They also want to make this roof in two panels so it can be stored in the cargo area of the car. If this car becomes a reality, the roof will likely be made of a composite material rather than aluminum.

Adding an Aggressive Spoiler; Yes Please

Another upgrade that we may see if the Sport Top model of the Toyota Supra ever arrives is a massive rear spoiler that will sit just below the end of the rear hatch window. This could be an aggressive and impressive item to give us more of the sporty appearance we desire.

There’s no proof the new Sport Top will ever become part of the Toyota Supra lineup, but that doesn’t mean that’s not the case. This platform already has a convertible model with the BMW Z4, which means it’s completely possible we will see a top-down, or at least top-off, version of this car sometime in the near future.
