Did Tesla Bite Off More than it Could Chew?

Tesla has been lauded for the fact that they now make the most impressive electric vehicles on the road. The Tesla Model S has for the past few years been a symbol of style, responsibility and luxury with the most advanced equipment available. This car has even been upgraded to the point of incorporating a nearly flawless autopilot system that allows owners to let the car take over on the highway when its properly marked. This is the flagship model from Tesla and aside from a few minor complaints from only a few customers it has performed perfectly for the company.

Now we have the SUV model on the market for us to admire and enjoy in the form of the Model X. With gullwing doors and sensors all around you would think this model wouldn’t have any issues as Tesla should have worked all this out ahead of time in the testing phase and in the production of the Model S, but that’s not the story for the Model X. In fact the story for this vehicle has been so bad that CEO Elon Musk decided to set up shop at the end of the Model X production line and asked for the resignations of two of the heads of production for this vehicle.

While not every Model X has the same issues as what Barrett Lyon of California is experiencing, his Model X will give you an idea of just what this vehicle is doing that has caused him dismay. To preface the story of Mr. Lyon, he already owns a Tesla Model S and Tesla Roadster so he is intimately familiar with the products from this company and what to expect from them. The issues he has dealt with so far seem too far and away appear to be more than anyone should have to face.

The problems in the Model X owned by Barrett Lyon include the doors doing some “weird, wicket things” that include slamming shut on his wife and opening on their own in the garage for no reason at all. He also claims the Autopilot is dangerous to use in the rain as the vehicle tends to swerve into different lanes for no reason at all. He further claims the power front doors which are supposed to sense other cars and obstacles are opening into them and the touchscreen tends to freeze up. The second row seat has caused the driver’s seat to fold forward in this Model X and the autopark feature doesn’t around ninety percent of the time.

Mr. Lyon is looking for a refund of his full purchase price of this vehicle and with all the issues he has already faced it’s hard to blame him for demanding his money back. It’s hard to believe one vehicle can have this many issues and certainly tells that tale as to why Elon Musk is spending so much time and effort on the Model X assembly line these days.

While this is not the first lawsuit Tesla has had to face with their products, if more of the Model X vehicle perform this way Tesla may want to consider a recall in order to fix all the issues before someone is hurt or killed in one of these vehicles. This is a great example of how far away from fully autonomous driving we are if Tesla is unable to have the Model X perform correctly with the autopilot system aboard that was a hit in the Model S.

With the Model 3 on the horizon and Tesla working to ramp up their production well beyond anything they have ever accomplished in the past it may be time for the Elon Musk to take a step back and get the Model X right before venturing into something as aggressive and massively produced as the Model 3.
